Learning The Bailey Method is for ANYONE from 6 to 60, but there's no better time for tennis players to learn
about footwork, movement and balance than WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG.
There's no need to tell you that young players are like sponges! They soak up information like a vacuum sucks up
dust! They're energetic, they're spontaneous, they're uninhibited and they are eager to learn, especially when it's
something new and different. Also...
It's easy for coaches and clubs to recognise a player who stands out from the crowd with Balance, Co-ordination
and Fitness and...
It's a great way for Identifying Young Athletic Talent!
I have taught hundreds of young tennis players how to implement The Bailey Method into their training and into
their game and I know how much they love to watch the Pros in tournaments and how quickly they recognise the
footwork and movements of their role models.
They can relate to…
- Roger Federer’s “ Front Foot Hop “
- Serena William’s “2 Foot Pivot”
- The Leyton Hewitt “Mogul”
- Andy Roddick’s “Run Around Transfer”
They can see the benefits and how these movements really work.
But The Bailey Method is not just about footwork and balance its also about fitness and athleticism.
As with any sport it's important to be fit and to keep injury free especially at a young age and prevention is
better than cure.
In the Parents Guide Book, I recommend many on-court and
off-court exercises in my discussion with Sonja Hudaly who has been actively involved in her daughter
Martina’s training since she started training with me at the age of 9.
I suggest that many of these exercises are best done on grass or sand and they enjoy it more when there is
a variety and a change of environment. Guidance from a professional is recommended because there is every component
of fitness in the game of tennis - aerobic, anaerobic, agility, speed and power.

Learning the footwork from scratch is far more beneficial than trying to improve it later and there would be
nothing better than getting young children to start learning the language and the movements even before they pick
up a racket. Most kids pick up the theory and the language very quickly and by practicing over and over again it
becomes natural and they don't have to think about it.
Footwork lessons add a new dimension to tennis because they learn about balance, positioning and foot placements
and its new and interesting and the tennis coach can help the children to learn to play tennis whilst having fun.
Great footwork is not just about movement it’s about reading and recognising the approaching ball and knowing what
footwork is needed for the best return shot.
Even if you are not a tennis player yourself, there are real benefits when a coach takes a parent onto the court
during the lesson because you become involved and automatically learn the language, and by learning the language
with your child you can help them to practice the footwork. You soon become more aware of the importance of
footwork and can see how well the movements are choreographed and how much more quickly and efficiently your child
moves around the court.
